| Culturally Speaking: How do you think the American media/society, effects young black girls? I ask this because it is pretty clear that, aside from black people as a whole, black women are mainly targeted negatively and are pressured to match up to the American "standard". Not trying to complain, but this is a problem, even though I am biracial, i feel more emotionally connected with my black side. In America, their standard of beauty for a women would most likely be "Light skin, straight hair, light eyes, thin nose, slim, etc". but the stereotypical description of a black women is different than that, "Darker skin, curly hair(for most) or as people like to call it arrogantly "nappy", wide, broad nose, thick lips, etc. I guess I wouldn't have such a problem with it, if they didn't word it so negatively, and trust me I have heard much, much worse than that. Basically they are telling people that "white is right' and "Black is down". On TV, you see ethnic women, going through surgeries, whether it's a nose job, botox, whatever. It's usually based on the desire to reach those "American standards". Then we have the skin bleaching problem, which is popular among many african americans and asian americans. It's crazy the lengths some will go just to look a certain way. Now the thing that really gets me mad is the young girls part, even as young as 4 years old and up, they are effected by this. For all women, we all know it's hard enough being a you girl, dealing with peer pressure, self esteem issues, fitting in, let alone a young black girl going through all of that, but on top of that, she is actually taught that she is not beautiful, just from looking into society, or things on TV. Most celebrities are white, not to say there are not any black celebrities, but take a look at a vast majority of them, especially the women. Americas so called ideal beauty for a black women is "lighten skin, thinner nose, straight hair, slim"hm...... not to far from the first one huh? It's not just standards of beauty either, it's the many stereotypes. Just a few of them, black women are ghetto, they are loud, have horrible attitudes, are not proud of who they, uneducated, get pregnant early, the most undesirable, etc, I could go on because there is too many! One that has been going on for a few years now, "black men prefer white and non-black women over their own women" I mean seriously? How is all this negativity supposed to make a young girl feel? If she grows up in a country where people are so hostile to what God made her. It pisses me of a great deal, but it's like there is nothing I can do about it, but it really needs to come to an end. White guyren are taught and raised to think they are the most beautiful, not trying to sound ignorant, but it's true. That can explain why many white people might have somewhat of a negative view on black people, to some extent, but not neccisarly racist.
